International Driving Licence

International Driving Permit: What You Need to Know

Planning to drive during your international travels? An International Driving Permit (IDP) is essential for legally operating a vehicle in many foreign countries. It serves as an official translation of your Indian driving license and is recognized in over 150 countries, facilitating seamless communication with foreign authorities.

What is an International Driving Permit?

The IDP is a document authorized by the United Nations that certifies you hold a valid driving license in your home country. It translates your license details into multiple languages, making it easier for foreign officials to verify your credentials. The IDP includes your name, photograph, and driver information, and must be carried alongside your original Indian driving license and passport when driving abroad. citeturn0search0

Why Do You Need an IDP?

While your Indian driving license proves your driving eligibility domestically, many countries require an IDP for legal recognition of your driving privileges. It’s often necessary for renting vehicles and may be required by insurance companies to provide coverage. Additionally, the IDP acts as a valid form of identification in countries where your original license’s language isn’t widely understood. citeturn0search0

How to Apply for an IDP in India

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has streamlined the process for obtaining an IDP. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Nearest RTO: Go to your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) with the necessary documents and application fee.
  1. Complete the Application Form: You can fill out the application form in person at the RTO or online via the Ministry’s portal (parivahan.gov.in). If applying online, bring the acknowledgment receipt to the RTO.
  1. Submit Documents and Fees: Provide the required documents and pay the prescribed fees at the RTO.
  1. Processing Time: The IDP is typically issued within 3–4 business days after submission.

Validity and Renewal

The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notification dated January 7, 2021, if your IDP expires while you’re abroad, you can renew it online through Indian Embassies without the need to submit a valid visa and medical certificate. citeturn0search0

Important Considerations

  • Eligibility: Only Indian citizens can apply for an IDP through Indian RTOs.
  • Recent License Holders: If your Indian driving license was issued within three months prior to your IDP application, you may need to retake the driving test.
  • Beware of Frauds: Apply for the IDP only through official government transport authorities to avoid scams.

Obtaining an International Driving Permit is a straightforward process that ensures you’re prepared to drive legally and confidently during your international travels.
